The farm owners
Nice to meet you! We are Vicky (left) and Dominique (right). We are the owner of Mouflon Farm. We have always been passionate about animals and farming is our calling. We decided to learn from local farmers while doing our studies, in marketing for Vicky and biotechnology for Dominique, at the same time.
In 2018, we are ready to make our project a reality. The stars align and we have the opportunity to rent a farm. We jumped at the chance and bought our first 8 Icelandic sheep: seven ewe and one ram, Maurice. His color was the inspiration for our farm's name as he was a black mouflon.
A year later, the opportunity to buy a farm presented itself to us and in March 2020, we moved our herd and our soap making business to the farm you know today. Since then, our flock as grown and we now have 50 sheep in our care.
We are grateful to be able to live the crazy dream that is Mouflon Farm, it would never have been possible without our friends, family and amazing clients! ♥
The farm
Our farm is located in Pontiac, in the beautiful Outaouais region. The 305-acre land is bordered by the Quyon River and offers a beautiful diversity of fields, forest and other waterways that cross it.
Our farming practices
How do our sheep play a part in this biodiversity? Through good grazing management! Our intensive rotation, with a new paddock every 24 to 48 hours, allows us to control the amount of plants consumed. Our sheep eat around 50% of the vegetation cover, which creates stress on the plants and encourages root growth.
This will have a snowball effect; a better root system means better water retention, which means the plant will be healthier, which will allow insects to consume and/or pollinate it, which will allow wild birds to enjoy it, which will allow small carnivores to eat, and so on. In our eyes, no plant is bad: if the sheep don't like it, another species will enjoy it!
